Purpose: This study aims to classify and analyze research on family caregivers of home-dwelling patients with dementia, domestically and internationally, to identify current research trends by comparing and analyzing the characteristics based on these classifications, Methods: This secondary literature analysis study focuses on research trends related to family caregivers of patients with dementia. The study included research published until August 2023, with data collected from domestic (RISS, KISS and DBpia) and international databases (CINAHL and PubMed). Results: Ninety-six studies were selected and reviewed; 50 domestic and 46 international studies. Quantitative research was predominant, with "burden" as the most significant factor. A noticeable trend showed that the primary family caregiver of patients with dementia has shifted from female children to spouses. Intervention programs considered the emotional aspects of family caregivers but were generally conducted without considering the specific relationship with the patient, targeting family caregivers generally. Qualitative research predominantly used phenomenological methods to identifying categories of experiences such as adaptation, coping efforts, the burden and pressure of caregiving, negative emotions during the caregiving process, and identity confusion. Conclusion: This study addresses the emotional challenges faced by family caregivers of home-dwelling patients with dementia, highlighting the need for the development of intervention programs and system improvements that reflect these challenges.
