Purpose: This methodological study aimed to develop an evidence-based protocol through a systematic literature review and guideline analysis of peripheral intravenous therapy for inpatients. Methods: To draft preliminary items for the protocol, the extracted literature and guidelines were systematically reviewed and categorized according to the study's objectives into preparation, insertion, dressing, and maintenance of peripheral intravenous therapy. After expert validity verification, a final evidence-based peripheral intravenous therapy protocol was developed for adult inpatients at a single hospital. Results: We retrieved 3,232 studies, of which 27 were selected for systematic literature review. Additionally, four guidelines were analyzed. A systematic literature review analyzed various methods and contents of peripheral intravenous therapy. The study participants were adult inpatients who underwent peripheral intravenous therapy. A preliminary protocol for evidence-based peripheral intravenous therapy was developed based on a systematic literature review and guideline analysis. Conclusion: The significance of this protocol lies in its development for new nurses or nurses with < 1 year of experience in small-to-medium-sized hospitals without dedicated intravenous therapy nurses, enabling them to perform effective nursing care.
