초록

Purpose: Our study aims to review factors that improve self-care among older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods: We employed a cross-sectional research design. We used a standardized questionnaire to collect data from 120 older adults (≥65 years) with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at two university-affiliated hospitals. We analyzed the data with descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS version 25.0. Results: The average self-care score was 77.46 out of 115, and the mean symptom experience score was 12.57 out of 63. The average self-efficacy score was 135.86 out of 320, and the social support score was 36.26 out of 60. Social support and previous hospitalization experiences associated with respiratory issues significantly impacted the quality of self-care among older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Conclusion: Notably, the degree of self-care improved with enhanced social support and favorable hospitalization experiences. Social support has enormous potential to improve the self-care capabilities of older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is imperative to implement programs that actively encourage the engagement of family to strengthen the social support provided to older patients for their care.
